Author: Sharon Chmielarz

Reviews:

"This uniquely American book combines Sharon Chmielarz’s ear for language, eye for detail, and appetite for history to create the past and present moment along the Yellowstone Trail.  Sparked by imagination, sobered by facts, these lively poems portray inner lives and outer realities, wonder and routine, tragedy and ruin. 'For whom does one take notes?' the poet asks. Chmielarz takes them for all of us."

~Patricia Kirkpatrick, Odessa

"These finely crafted poems cast an unromantic, yet tender eye on a land that made indigenous cultures--the same land that made generations of immigrants and their descendants love it enough to stay or, as the poet does, return. Sharon Chmielarz has written deft and stirring poems that cull Native and non-Native history to manifest the current, and often conflicted, conscience of neighbors dwelling in the threatened borderlands of the American plains."

~Heid Erdrich, Cell Traffic

"Pound for pound, wet or dry, Sharon Chmielarz is the most powerful poet in these parts!"

~Mike Finley, editor, Lief Magazine

"In these gorgeous poems from the wise side of a life in which no detail escapes the grace of significance, poet Sharon Chmielarz has redrawn the space between Mozart and Sitting Bull, Auschwitz and Standing Rock, unhitched a father from his chosen spouse and redrawn his life with alternatives in which his daughters will “go back to the universe and wait another round.” Love From the Yellowstone Trail unhitches us from the tired wagon of the history we think we know—“Is this a house / Or a house with borders?”—and leaves us open on all sides."

~Leslie Adrienne Miller, Y

"What a joy it is to read Sharon’s poetry! Exactly detailed, curious with heart as well as mind, each one reveals the natural world as the intersection of history, theology, exploration, human desires and complicated loves. Reading these poems allows an intimacy with a way of seeing the world that is astonishing in the way it is both familiar and utterly new."

~W. Scott Olsen, editor Ascent
