Author: Don Bloch
Description: In A Shadow at the Gate, Don Bloch describes his farm upbringing, and many will relate to this modest start in life. But Don had dreams larger than being a farmer. He wanted freedom. He tried out some options—college, religious life, being a hobo—before the Vietnam War draft overtook him. He chose the Air Force over the infantry as maybe more challenging and found some of the freedom he was looking for in the sky. He gives graphic descriptions of piloting jet airplanes. Finally Bloch builds a career with the Drug Enforcement Administration and gives us an honest insight into what it’s like to be a special agent/pilot for the DEA.
About the Author: The twelfth of eighteen children, Don Bloch was born near Albany, Minnesota, in 1942, and raised on a dairy farm. He studied to be a priest, became a hobo, served as a pilot instructor for the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, and finally made a career with the Drug Enforcement Administration. He is a retired special agent/ pilot for the DEA. Don and his wife live out in the Avon Hills of central Stearns County in Minnesota.
