Author: Gregor-Alexander von Ehrenfels

Description:
While it is important for us to think of ourselves as Americans, it is also important to remember the nations and the places that have inspired America's strength and unique diversity. Nordic Spirit, the first in a series of photo essays entitled the American Spirit, celebrates Scandinavian-Americans—those whose ancestors came from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. The stoic, yet warm, nature of these people is a cultural trait that has impacted the American culture.

The photographs in Nordic Spirit highlight the individuals who might otherwise get lost in a sea of faces. As facets of each subject's personality are captured on film and page, one begins to understand what Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard meant when we said, "Ordinarily, we human beings are sensual and, therefore, as soon as it is a gathering, the impression changes—we see something abstract, the crowd, and we become different. But in the eyes of God, the infinite spirit, all the millions that have lived and now live do not make a crowd. He only sees each individual.

Nordic Spirit is about the individuals who make up America and about remembering that all people come from somewhere and bring traits of their heritage with them into American culture—it's about the differences that become part of the whole.

Review:
"Gregor-Alexander von Ehrenfels is a gifted photographer with that rare talent for capturing the inner qualities of his subjects. His keen insight into the human psyche allows for a penetrating study of the individual behind the facade that distinguishes each of us.

"The human face as a 'window' to the soul, spirit, and character of each person is his starting point. From here the journey becomes a study of individual features of the human face as it is laid open to the observer behind the camera.

"With Nordic Spirit, Mr. von Ehrenfels has created an eloquent and majestic portrayal of Scandinavian-Americans."
– Henning B. Jensen, Artist

About the Author:
While most people today pretend not to see the differences in people of different ethnic backgrounds, photographer Gregor-Alexander von Ehrenfels chooses to focus on those differences—and celebrate them!

This interest in the beauty of the human face has motivated the author to create a series of  books called the American Spirit, that captures the spirit of our country's many, wonderful, ethnic groups in photographic portraits.

While visiting Minnesota, he observed the high concentration of Scandinavian-Americans in the state's population. Immediately, he launched himself into this new project, photographing men, women, and children of Scandinavian ancestry. This book, the first in the American Spirit series, is titled Nordic Spirit. It features 100 striking black-and-white portraits. Each photograph is accompanied by a Scandinavian proverb that expresses in words the feeling of each portrait.

Gregor von Ehrenfels is an American photographer hailing from the Northeast. He has also worked in advertising and design and has been honored with numerous awards for his work.
